NOSTR: A Scalable Protocol for Decentralized Communication Networks

Abstract

This white paper introduces a novel approach for scaling NOSTR (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays), a critical protocol in decentralized communication networks, to handle billions of users and events globally. Central to this approach is the adaptation of advanced architectural principles, historically successful in large-scale internet systems, to the unique decentralized and relay-based nature of NOSTR. Key among these principles is the efficient handling of event identification, stateless interactions, strategic data caching, and the implementation of a robust, layered system architecture. Additionally, the paper emphasizes the importance of standardized interfaces and a clear delineation between client and server roles to facilitate global content delivery and seamless user experiences across diverse geographies. The challenges of applying these principles within a decentralized context are thoroughly examined, offering insights into balancing scalability with the decentralized ethos of NOSTR. The proposed solutions aim not only to enhance the protocol's capacity to manage a vast number of events and users but also to ensure its adaptability and resilience in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, thereby revolutionizing the capabilities of decentralized communication networks.
